At-home facials and self care are all the rage right now, and for good reason. Although there’s no denying that visiting a skin or dermal therapist at a skin clinic will give your skin great results… at home facials, and especially at-home peels, can still provide your skin with all the amazing benefits experienced from an in-clinic treatment. (Pssst; if you live in Brisbane and are looking for an in-clinic treatment, visit Soho Skin Rejuvenation!)
If the thought of a peel makes you slightly uncomfortable, that’s understandable! We’re here to assure you that chemical peels at home are a safe and affordable way to achieve great results. When used correctly, peels can actually be a gentle, yet extremely effective, way of allowing fresh and radiant skin to shine through.
Why choose a peel to treat your skin concerns?
Chemical peels are still, to this day, some of the most effective, practical and affordable skin treatments available. Every day, our skin is subject to the weather, pollutants, irritants and the subtle ‘wear and tear’ of life.
On top of the everyday skin aggressors, our skin cells are always turning over and sometimes, need a little boost! Cell turnover is a process that slows down with age. This slowdown of cell turnover in our bodies contributes to signs of ageing and many other common skin concerns.
Peels are useful for treating a wide array of skin concerns. From fine lines and wrinkles, to acne, pigmentation, dehydration, and almost everything in between.
How Do Skin Peels Work?
A peel will generally include either Alpha Hydroxy Acids or AHA’s (think lactic, malic and citric), Beta Hydroxy Acids or BHA’s (like salicylic acid) or other exfoliators such as enzymes.
During a treatment, the chemical solution is applied to your skin. This solution works by removing the outermost layer of the epidermis and therefore, accelerates skin cell turnover.
If you opt for in-clinic treatments, you may experience some redness, flaking or skin shedding after your peel. Many peels (especially at-home peels), however, are quite superficial and come with no downtime (i.e., minimal to no skin peeling or redness). The strength of the peel determines the depth of the peel. That is, how deep into your skin that the product penetrates.
Bear in mind, we are talking about the type of superficial peels that you would receive from your local skin clinic, and not a medical-grade peel.
What about chemical peels at home?
Although at-home peels aren’t at quite the same strength and abrasiveness as in-clinic peels, they are, essentially, a powerful exfoliator. If you’d rather save some time and money here and there, an at-home peel is a great way to enjoy the refined radiance that comes from using this type of product.
Some skin concerns, such as hyperpigmentation, would be treated in-clinic. However, if you’re simply looking for a freshen-up and boost, there’s a vast range of at-home peel products to treat your concerns.
Dermalogica’s Rapid Reveal Peel is a perfect place to start to achieve a visible difference in your skin. The ten-pack of applications provides maximum strength with no downtime, meaning you can go about your day right away!
Rapid reveal peel contains AHA extracts- lactic acid and plant enzymes. Lactic acid helps to reveal new, firmer skin, to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and remove surface debris without causing dehydration. Pumpkin Fruit Enzyme + Rice Bran Extract even skin tone by accelerating cell turnover and therefore resurfacing the skin.
We would recommend avoiding chemical peels at home if pregnant, or speak with your current skin specialist.
