Have you ever found yourself confused as to what you should use on your skin? The internet is flooded with skincare products that promise miracles. But is it necessary to use so many products to have optimum skin health? Let me help you weed out the fluff and find what your skin really needs to maintain skin health.
All skin types essentially need the same things. Cleansing, Exfoliating, hydrating, DNA repair, sun protection and monthly professional facial. Each skin type requires different active ingredients and treatments to acheive & maintain skin health.
Oily Skin – A skin with obvious open pores, congestion and oily shine throughout the day.
- Use a daily cleanser that contains Glycolic, Mandelic and/or Salicylic Acid. These AHA’s and BHA’s will help exfoliate, dislodge oil in the pores and prevent breakout or acne. Don’t forget to double cleanse twice a day, it does make a difference. Skinstitut Glycolic Cleanser 12% is fantastic as is Dermalogica Medibac Clearing Skin Wash
- Use a Vitamin A corrector at night to control the oil, refine the pores and prevent acne. My choice Cosmedix Refine.
- Use an oil balancing hydration lotion morning and night to regulate oil production and prevent dehydration (which causes more blackheads) I love Dermalogica Medibac Oil Control Lotion.
- Use a Zinc Oxide moisturising sunscreen to protect your skin from the sun whilst repairing damage caused from breakout. Cosmedix Hydrate + is a favorite with my clients.
- Get a monthly professional pore clearing treatment will ensure your skin stays clean and healthy. If you are in Brisbane try my Steam & Squeeze or Buff & Refine microdermabrasion for super smooth skin.
Combination Skin – It is very rare to see a normal skin type. Usually people will have a combination oily skin with obvious pores on the T Zone or a combination dry with very few obvious pores on the nose and dry skin everywhere else. Hydration is the combination skins best friend.
- Cleanse with a lactic acid based exfoliating cleanser such as Aspect Purastat or Societe AHA Cleanser.
- At night replenish and restore your skins hydration levels & antioxidants with Societe Skin Hydration Complex.
- Maintain high levels of moisture morning and night with Aspect Phytostat 9 all purpose anti aging moisturiser.
- Invest in regular clinic peels to keep your skin healthy, smooth and balanced. Aspect Lactobotanical Peel is the ideal hydration support skin peel for combination skin types.
Dry Skin – With next to no obvious pores a dry skin is in constant need of nourishment.
- Cleanse morning and night with a nourishing cream cleanser such as Dermalogica Essential Cleansing Solution.
- Regular daily exfoliation is a must to prevent a build up of dry dead skin cells, it will also stimulate cellular renewal for fresh plump skin cells to be present at all times. Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant can be used each night to gentle slough away dead cells and brighten the skin.
- Skinmedica TNS Essential Serum will ensure your skin has all the nutrients it needs to stay plump & healthy and Skinmedica Dermal Repair Cream will give your skin all the nourishment it needs.
- Treat your skin to a nourishing Germaine de Capuccini facial each month so your skincare professional can keep a good eye on your skins condition and pick up on any underlying concerns, especially coming into winter.

My favorite skin health essentials
Aspect Retinol Brulee – Is there nothing retinol can’t do. I call it “the gate keeper” because it opens up our cells to receive other essential vitamins whilst on the skin’s surface it is protecting against and reversing sun damage, reducing pigmentation and scarring, firming, refining pores and normalising oil production to prevent breakouts as well as regulating other skin functions. Please Note: you can only use Retinol products at night plus you will need to step up the use slowly to avoid a retinoid reaction if your skin is not acclimatised to retinol products. Also avoid using Retinol if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Boost Hydration Levels
Societe Skin Hydration Complex – Combat dehydration with an ultra soothing, calming and light weight hydration serum that contains the added benefit of MAP vitamin C to stimulate collagen and elastin production. Hyaluronic Acid boosts hydration levels to plump surface skin cells.
Cosmedix Emulsion – A intense hydration cream with Shea Butter and Jojoba to restore moisture balance to dry and dehydrated skin. Liquid crystals maintain moisture levels and antioxidants protect the skin from free radical damage.
Societe Rejuvenating Peptide Gel Mask – Using a unique formulation of peptides, plant stem cells and potent anti-aging ingredients, this cooling gel mask will help with skin rejuvenation. They contain a unique technology called TCD (Transdermal Cosmetic Delivery) this activates the mask to infuse key ingredients via the skins own heat. Dehydration, redness and irritation is rapidly reduced creating a hydrated and calm complexion.
Provide Relief For Dry & Dehydrated Skin
Cosmedix Rescue+: Dry skin, cracked lips & post peel skin love this soothing, hydration and skin repairing balm. Best used at night to nourish and repair the dehydration caused by winter, it can also be left on as a super rich night cream.
Aspect Hydrating Mask – A super rich and luxurious cream masque to hydrate and infuse antioxidants into an environmentally damaged skin.
